New Gondola in Happo-One Hakuba

Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort has announced a major redevelopment that will see a new gondola and base area completed by December 2027. This upgrade is one of the biggest infrastructure improvements in the resort’s history, aimed at improving access, reducing congestion, and enhancing the overall visitor experience at one of Hakuba Valley’s most important ski areas.

The new Happo gondola will replace the existing Adam gondola, which has been in operation since 1983. Running from the Nakiyama base to Usagidaira, the new lift will cover 2,180 metres with a vertical rise of 652 metres. The upgraded system will operate at six metres per second, increasing passenger capacity from 1,350 to 2,400 people per hour. The added capacity will help reduce queue times during busy periods, giving skiers and snowboarders more time on the mountain. Larger ten-person cabins will also make it easier for families and groups of friends to ride together, while wide doors and level boarding will simplify access for all guests.

A new base center at Nakiyama will serve as the main entry point to the resort. The building will consolidate ticketing, rental, ski school reception, and guest information into one convenient location, streamlining movement through the area. Digital signage will display real-time updates on weather and lift operations, and the open, light-filled design will reflect the surrounding alpine landscape. Expanded parking facilities will improve accessibility and ease traffic congestion around the base area.

The redevelopment addresses long-standing challenges with the resort’s transport infrastructure while laying the groundwork for future, year-round use. By improving efficiency, comfort, and capacity, the new Happo gondola and base center will make it easier for visitors to enjoy the slopes and surrounding mountain environment throughout the year.

Hakuba Happo-One recorded one of its best seasons in recent years for the 2024-25 winter season with consistent snowfall from mid-December through February drawing strong visitor numbers from Japan and overseas. The success of the season reinforced Hakuba’s reputation for reliable snow and high-quality terrain, while ongoing investment in lift and base facilities continues to strengthen its position within the Hakuba Valley.
