It is hard to look anywhere recently without seeing constant updates about the new coronavirus and Hokkaido is no different. There was a time when it appeared as if the northern island of Japan was going to be one of the worst hit areas. However, fast forward three weeks and the situation appears to have remained relatively unchanged. In fact a nonbinding state of emergency was declared on 28th February with residents being asked to stay indoors at the weekend but this has now come to an end with the Governor of Hokkaido declaring, “The situation has not become as threatening as I had feared”.
While many other areas of the world are struggling, life in much of Hokkaido has been continuing as usual with the ski resorts being no exception. Resorts have not only been open but conditions have been excellent. We have seen several significant snowfalls over the past month, leading to some superb days on the mountain. With the reduced number of tourists in the area, fresh powder can be found in resort even days after snowfall. March brings sunny days as well, which create perfect Spring conditions, especially after a storm. This additionally offers a chance for those keen to head into the backcountry, with stunning views of the wider area awaiting anyone willing to ‘earn their turns’.
The forecast looks great for the rest of the month, with fresh snow forecast and temperatures staying low, and there is still lots of skiing to be done before the beginning of May. At the same time the focus is starting to switch towards next season and many accommodations have already opened to take bookings for winter 2020-21. Early bird discounts have been increased amid the current uncertainty, with plenty of great deals for those ready to book.
Needless to say, next season we will be ready to go again and we can’t wait for those cold, crisp, powder filled mornings to come again! For more information on pricing and availability for the 2020/21 season, please visit www.japanskiexperience.com and submit an enquiry.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Hokkaido in the near future!
