Hiking the Peak

by Ben on February 3, 2011

Hiking the peak is near the top of the list of ‘must do’ activities in Niseko, especially on a gloriously sunny day like today.

With no fresh snow on the ground overnight and the sun shining bright in a blue, cloudless sky all eyes were on the top King Lift #4. As soon as it started turning we rushed across, joined a small queue and took the lift to the top. Once the peak gate is opened it’s a 15-20min hike up, colours blurring as everyone huffs and puffs their way up to the hut at the summit as quickly as they can.

From the 1308m peak a whole new world of skiable terrain opens up to you. Today we rode straight from the top down around the back and into the Annupuri resort area. Riding with friends and getting fresh tracks from top to bottom is the perfect start to the day!

Important note: Access to the peak is via one of Niseko’s back country gates. If going through a gate, you should carry (and know how to use) back country gear – a beacon, probe and shovel are the bare essentials. Only explore the back country with experienced riders and skiers; if you don’t know the area, hire a guide. Always check the weather and avalanche reports before you go.

Excitedly waiting to get up higher

Taking in the view before the hike

The final few metres

Coming down from the peak

Fresh tracks

Beautiful weather, untouched snow, perfect morning

Carrying on down to Annupuri

Arms raised to the heavens in joy!

The view on the way back over to Hirafu

The image that stays in your mind when back in the office
